The new school year means new shoes, fresh stationery, and… heavier backpacks than ever.
While September can be exciting for kids (and let’s be honest, sometimes a relief for parents ?), it’s also the time when we see a spike in young patients with aches, strains, and postural issues.
At Inspired Health Chiropractic, we believe that healthy spines help healthy minds, and a few small changes can make a huge difference to your child’s comfort, focus, and overall wellbeing.
1. Backpacks: Lighten the Load ?
The “everything but the kitchen sink” approach to packing a school bag is common, but it can be harmful. ?
Tips:
- Choose a two-strap backpack (worn on both shoulders).
- Try to make sure it is no heavier than 10–15% of your child’s body weight.
- Pack heavier items closest to their back.
- Adjust straps so the bag sits above the waist.
A heavy or badly positioned bag can cause rounded shoulders, forward head posture, and even back pain.
2. Sitting Smart ?
Children spend hours each day sitting – in class, doing homework, and using screens. Poor posture here can affect not just their spine, but also their ability to focus.
Encourage:
- Feet flat on the floor. ?
- Knees and hips at roughly 90°.
- Shoulders relaxed (not hunched forward).
- Screen at eye level to avoid neck strain. ?️
3. Keep Them Moving ?♂️
Kids aren’t designed to sit still for long stretches. Regular movement keeps joints mobile, improves blood flow to the brain, and helps them concentrate.
Ideas:
- Break homework into 20–30 minute chunks with movement in between. ⏰
- Walk or cycle to school where possible. ?
- Sign them up for activities that mix fun with fitness – dance, swimming, martial arts, football, or even family walks. ⚽️
4. Screen Time Savvy ?
Tablets, phones, and gaming consoles often lead to “tech neck”– a forward head posture that can strain the neck and upper back.
Set limits on recreational screen time and encourage breaks. When using devices:
- Hold them at eye level.
- Sit up tall with shoulders back.
5. Nutrition for Brain & Body ?
Healthy posture isn’t just about muscles and bones – it’s also supported by good nutrition such as brain friendly snacks like nuts, berries, yoghurt, and veggie sticks. Try where possible to avoid excess sugary snacks which can cause energy dips and affect concentration.
6. Regular Spinal Check ups ?
Just like you’d take your child for a dental check up, it makes sense to check their spine as they grow. Rapid growth spurts, sports, and daily habits can all cause changes in spinal alignment.
At Inspired Health Chiropractic, we work gently with children to:
- Identify and address small issues early.
- Support healthy posture and movement.
- Give tailored advice for school life.
The Bigger Picture ?
A healthy spine helps with:
- Improved coordination – essential for sport and play.
- Reduced aches and pains – making school days more enjoyable.
- Better concentration – a comfortable child is a focused learner.
Bottom line: Supporting your child’s posture and spinal health is an investment in their academic success, physical wellbeing, and confidence. ?
