Sun Loungers and Back Pain: What’s Really Going On?

Sun Loungers and Back Pain: What’s Really Going On?

As the warmer weather returns and many people look forward to relaxing in the sun, the sun loungers get pulled out the garage and brushed off ready for use. For some, it’s a way of relaxing and getting the sun kissed look they desire, for others it is the Vitamin D boost they have been craving.☀️ However, a surprising number of people report that after spending time laying on a sun lounger, they experience discomfort or pain in their lower back

This raises the question… could there be a connection between lying on a sun lounger and back pain? Let’s take a closer look. 👀

The Structure of a Sun Lounger

Sun loungers are designed for relaxation, not spinal support. Whether it’s on a beach, by the pool, or in your garden, most loungers have a flat or slightly reclined surface with minimal cushioning. And while they may be perfect for catching some rays, they’re not so great for maintaining healthy spinal alignment. 🤯

Lying still on a flat surface, especially for an extended period, can put strain on the natural curves of your spine, particularly in the lower back (lumbar) region. For anyone who already experiences tightness, stiffness, or mild joint or muscle issues, that lack of support can easily make things worse. And even if you’ve never had back issues before, you might find yourself feeling stiff or sore after a good sunbathing session.

Why Back Pain Happens

There are a few key reasons why lounging in the sun might leave your back feeling anything but relaxed:

  • Underlying tension
If you already have tight muscles, restricted joints, or mild nerve irritation, the pressure from a sun lounger can make those issues more noticeable, and more uncomfortable.
  • Lack of lumbar support
The lower back naturally curves inward. When lying flat or semi-reclined on a lounger without proper support, that curve can either flatten or become exaggerated, depending on your body and posture, which can cause discomfort or aggravate existing tension.
  • Stillness
Sunbathing often means staying still for long periods. That’s great for relaxation, but not so much for your spine. Muscles and joints stiffen up quickly when they’re not moving, particularly if you’re lying in an awkward position.

Practical Tips to Help

If you love lounging in the sun (and who doesn’t?), here are a few ways to enjoy it without upsetting your back:

  • Support your lower back
Place a small cushion or rolled-up towel under your knees when lying on your back. This helps maintain the natural curve of your spine and reduces pressure on your lower back.
  • Stretch beforehand
Gentle movements like cat-cow, spinal twists, or knees-to-chest can loosen your spine before you settle in or after you have got off the sun lounger.
  • Shift positions regularly
Try not to stay in one position for too long. Even just adjusting slightly every 10–15 minutes can make a difference.
  • Listen to your body
If your back feels uncomfortable while you’re lounging, take a break, sit upright, or change your posture. It might be your body’s way of telling you it needs support.
  • Check in with a professional
If back pain continues after lounging, or becomes a frequent issue, it’s worth getting it assessed. A chiropractor can help figure out what’s really going on and how to fix it.

The sun lounger might help you soak up some vitamin D, but it’s not always doing your back any favours. A flat or poorly supported position, combined with heat and stillness, can be enough to stir up underlying issues or cause new discomfort.

The good news? A few simple adjustments can make all the difference. By supporting your spine properly and paying attention to what your body needs, you can enjoy your time in the sun without the unwelcome side effect of back pain. 🙌

And if your back’s still complaining after your lounging session? We’re here to help! ☺️
