Why Your Body Hates Long Journeys (And What To Do About It)

Why Your Body Hates Long Journeys (And What To Do About It)

It’s that time of year again… Suitcases are out, snacks are packed and Google Maps is open! And whether it’s a long drive down to Cornwall 🚗 or a flight somewhere sunny ✈️… your body is about to spend a lot of time doing one thing: Not moving.

But most people don’t realise… It’s not the holiday that causes the the aches and pains (unless you have been on an active holiday and had a few tumbles skiing). It’s the journey there!

Why Travel Can Leave You Feeling Stiff, Achey & “Off”

When you’re sat for long periods, whether in a car, plane or train – your body isn’t doing what it’s designed to do.

You’re sitting in one position for a long period, not using your muscles, reducing circulation and putting sustained load through your spine

Over time, this can lead to neck stiffness, lower back discomfort, tight hips, headaches and that “I just feel a bit broken” feeling 😅. And the longer the journey… the more it builds.

The Simple Shift That Makes The Biggest Difference

Here’s the good news… You don’t need a completely different seat. You don’t need a new car. You just need to move more than you think you should. Because your body doesn’t struggle with travel… It struggles with staying still for too long.

Long Drive? This Is Your Game Plan 🚗

If you’re driving for a few hours (or more), the biggest mistake people make is trying to “just get there.” Instead, think:

👉 Break the journey up

Aim to stop every 60–90 minutes, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Get out, walk around, stretch, reset. It doesn’t need to be a full stop at a services, just enough to wake your body back up.

👉 Change your position regularly

Even small adjustments in your seat, posture or leg position can reduce how much strain builds up over time.

👉 Don’t ignore the early niggles

That slight tightness in your back or neck? That’s your cue to move, not push through.

Flying? It’s The Same Rules ✈️

Flights are often worse because you’ve got less space and fewer natural breaks. So you need to be a bit more intentional. Try to:

👉 Stand up or walk the aisle when you can
👉 Gently move your ankles, knees and shoulders while seated
👉 Avoid staying completely still for hours on end

Even subtle movement helps keep circulation going and reduces stiffness.

The Unsung Hero: Your Travel Pillow 💤

Let’s talk about necks… Because this is where most people struggle. If your head is constantly dropping forwards or to the side while you’re travelling, your neck muscles are working overtime to support it!

That’s where a good travel pillow can make a huge difference. It helps support your neck, reduce strain, and stop you waking up feeling like you’ve “slept wrong” for 3 hours straight 😅

Hydration Matters More Than You Think 💧

This one gets overlooked all the time. When you’re dehydrated, your muscles fatigue quicker, joints feel stiffer and headaches are more likely. And between air con, coffee stops, and travel routines… most people aren’t drinking enough.

So keep it simple! Drink a little more water than you think you need. You are probably still not gettign as much as you think! Your body will thank you for it.

So just remember, travel isn’t the problem, the lack of movement is! The solution isn’t complicated, just move a bit more, change position regularly and listen to your body! Because if you can arrive at your destination feeling good…

You actually get to enjoy the holiday you’ve been looking forward to. ☀️
