While sleeping on a cloud ☁ sounds like heaven, waking up in a cloudy haze doesn’t. 🥱 Brain fog is a real thing that affects many people daily. Sometimes, this is caused by medical conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease. At other times it can be caused by something as simple as not getting enough quality sleep 💤 or not eating enough protein.
Regardless of what is causing your brain fog, it can be difficult to function with it! Symptoms include forgetfulness 🤔, headaches, slow thinking, confusion, trouble concentrating, or a feeling of pressure in your head. In a way, it feels like your brain 🧠 has slowed down, almost to a complete stop, making it tricky to function normally.
Luckily, there are some really simple ways that may help kick brain fog to the curb 🙌 so that you can have a day filled with energy and mental clarity!
1) Give Your Brain What It Needs
When we think about taking care of our bodies, we often don’t think about caring for our brain 🧠 health. Our brains are made up of a lot of fat and protein, so it doesn’t make much sense to restrict ourselves from healthy fats 🥑 and proteins 🧆. Sugary and processed foods 🍔 are also not our brain’s favourite food and can add to feelings of brain fog.
Here’s how you can prevent brain fog through what you eat:
- Eat plenty of veggies 🥦
- Make sure you’re getting enough protein and healthy fats in your diet 🫘
- Include plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids, they have anti-inflammatory superpowers 🐟
- Eat foods rich in antioxidants 🫐
- Ensure you boost your body’s natural energy production and regeneration with essential vitamins and minerals like iron and vitamin B12
- Keep your brain hydrated 💦
2) Stress A Little Less
Have you ever woken up the morning after a super stressful day and just felt totally ‘bleh’? 😑 Stress is a massive cause of brain fog. Learning to better manage your stress can have a big impact on how your brain and body work.
Managing your stress levels includes being realistic about what you can and can’t achieve in a day. Recognise when good enough is better than perfect and be reasonable about what those around you can achieve without your input.
Smiling 😁 and laughter 😂 are also natural stress busters. Put on your favourite comedy, laugh at your kids’ antics, and try to live on the lighter side of life!
3) Balance Exercise With Rest
Your body doesn’t know the difference between running on the treadmill 🏃️ and running away 🏃💨 from danger – to your body, they both feel like stressful situations and your natural “fight or flight” response kicks in.
While exercise 🏊️ is incredibly important to a healthy lifestyle, and it will most certainly help reduce brain fog. Most types of exercise stimulate your sympathetic nervous system which can cause stress, resulting in brain fog. It’s important to flex your parasympathetic nervous system through relaxation. 💆️ It helps to calm your body and mind. Activities like yoga 🧘️ and meditation can help with this.
4) Get Better Quality Sleep
No matter how much you sleep, getting low quality sleep is one of the most common causes of brain fog. 🥱 High quality sleep includes sticking to a set sleep schedule and resisting the urge to hit the snooze button 💤.
Getting natural daylight ☀ as soon as possible after you wake up and even exercising early in the day all contribute to a better night’s sleep.
As much as possible, try to keep your evenings calm and steer clear of screens 📱 and bright lighting 💡 about two hours before bedtime.
